This memorial is located in Faskrudsfjordur, one of East Fjords many beautiful fjords. French seamen were stationed in Faskrudsfjrodur in the 19th century. This memorial was set up in commemoration of 49 French and Belgium seamen that lost their lives at sea. In the background is on of my favorite mountain, Sandfell, a 743 m high rhyolite south of Fáskrúðsfjörður. It is a typical laccolith believed to be 600 m thick and one of the best examples of mountains from the tertier period in the northern hemisphere.
